Introduction
The Social Enterprise Academy is a social enterprise delivering learning and development programmes for anyone working for social purpose. We provide programmes in Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Social Impact Measurement for people and organisations at any stage in their development. We support people of all ages and backgrounds to understand more about social enterprise and develop the skills involved
Innovated in partnership with the Scottish Government, the purpose of Social Enterprise Schools is to inspire all young people to change their future through social enterprise. We do this by providing practitioner led transformational learning experiences which enables every young person to step up, realise their potential, and create the change they want to see in the world. Now in its 15th year, this fully-funded programme engages young people in the real-life experience of running their own viable business while making a positive impact in their communities.
Our pupil-led programme supports young people to identify environmental or social issues they want to solve and inspires them to establish a sustainable business to make that change happen.
Guided by the values of compassion, inclusion and participation, young people of all ages and abilities set-up and run a social enterprise. Engaging in practical experiences that develop successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors. Young people build confidence and wellbeing; establish effective personal, learning and entrepreneurial skills; and nurture their lifelong sense of social justice.
Social Enterprise Schools has a track record of delivering over 1,000 pupil-led social enterprises in schools across all of Scotland’s 32 local authorities.
Involvement with IDEEC
The opportunity to work in collaboration with organisations in Europe and Australia, to share our methodology and experience. To support the development of best practice for social entrepreneurial education, to inspire young people, teachers and policy makers about what’s possible
Berni Cullinane, Learning and Development Innovation Specialist: I joined the Academy in 2021 and moved to Scotland from Bristol where I worked with a youth charity supporting young people to become self-employed and set up in business. In my role with the Academy, I work on the design and development of new and innovative learning programmes.
James Johnstone, Social Enterprise Schools Senior Education Manager: My background is rooted in youth work and social enterprise. Throughout my career I have been drawn to organisations who are focused on making a social impact. Through my experience beginning as a youth worker and going on to volunteer for a range of organisations tackling issues such as homelessness and poverty both in Scotland and abroad before working for and Just Trading Scotland and now the Social Enterprise Academy, I have been immersed in some of the incredible work being done in Scotland’s third sector. With the IDEEC programme I’ll be looking to bring my experience of working in entrepreneurial education with Scotlands young people to the fore.
